CRU has long been associated with digital movie distribution. Large distribution companies rely on CRU drive carriers to carry movies from a digital cinema encoding or duplication company to theaters worldwide in time for the release date. The carrier contains an AES-encrypted hard drive with a digital cinema package (DCP) on it. When the movie is ingested, the private key is used to decrypt it so the theater can show the movie. A theater worker puts the carrier into a digital cinema server (DCS), which has a receiving frame and the movie is played to thousands of movie goers. After ingestion, the carrier is returned to the distributor for reuse.
Recently CRU’s marketing director was featured in Cinema Technology Magazine where he discussed the future of digital cinema distribution and the tools CRU is creating to address a quickly growing market. You can read the article here.
